The penny loafer, or college shoe, was first manufactured in America in 1910.
Just 20 years later, these simple slip-on shoes had become popular among students at the elite Ivy League universities.
It was there that the loafer earned its current name, “penny loafer.”
Many seem to believe that the term “penny loafer” stems from the idea that the diamond-shaped cutout was designed to hold
two pennies for an emergency call from a payphone, but this theory has proven to be an urban legend,
since American payphones never accepted pennies.
A more plausible story is that American students at Ivy League universities in the 1950s
made a fashion statement by placing a penny in their shoes, which was supposed to bring good luck for upcoming exams.
This penny loafer is particularly comfortable thanks to its natural crepe sole.
