"Harris Tweed "The most famous tweed is and remains Harris Tweed. It
perfectly reflects the country it comes from - strong, rustic and rough.
According to the law, this hand-woven tweed may only be produced on the
Outer Herbrides of Scotland - this law is not as old as the tradition
of tweed production, it was only written down in 1993. However, the
British Parliament had already passed the Trade Mark Act in 1905, which
was intended to ensure the quality standards of tweeds. Harris Tweed has
been recognized as a protected trademark since 1910 and has been
marketed with the "Orb and Maltese Cross" as a distinctive mark ever
since.
One of the special features in the production of
Harris Tweed is that the wool fleece is dyed rather than the yarn, as is
usually the case. With only around 30 basic colors, a wide range of
different shades can be created when spinning the wool. The old
Hattersley looms are then used to weave a wide variety of checks, plain,
herringbone and houndstooth. With an average weight of 500 g per meter,
Harris Tweed is ideal for robust jackets and coats that can be worn in
spring, autumn and winter and offer perfect protection against wind and
weather. The tweed is temperature-regulating, robust and durable;
